Another Example of Art as a Communication Tool

The last time I mentioned art as a way to communicate the ideas and feelings rattling around inside people’s heads was when Venezuelans were comparing the privilege Caracas enjoys as the capital of Venezuela to the privilege the Capital district in The Hunger Games enjoys.

And now we’re back at it… But this time with Europe’s lil dictator, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, being compared to the power plots of The Godfather and House of Cards.

In pursuit of more power, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has purged the judiciary of enemies, jailed journalists and crushed anti-government protests. Now, he has ousted his closest political ally, the country’s prime minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, whose modest effort to check Mr. Erdogan’s ambition was too much for the president.

Mr. Erdogan has tried to silence his critics, sometimes with comical effects, and is seeking to change the Constitution to establish a more powerful presidency and solidify his status as the pre-eminent political figure in Turkey.

The ouster of Mr. Davutoglu offered another vivid example of Mr. Erdogan’s autocratic style and his mastery of power politics that Turks this week likened to characters from “The Godfather” or “House of Cards.”

Again, art that lays outside the realm of what people normally envision as art (oil paintings and such) is proving its worth as a medium of expression… a way to communicate abstract thoughts and feelings with others and arrive at the same general ideas.

The general idea in this case is that Erdogan is a power hungry lil weasel with perfect analogs to be found in Political and Mafia Dramas.
