Short answer is NO, Gandalf did not get high in the sense you’re most likely thinking. The “weed” in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is “pipe-weed”… which is tobacco. J.R.R. Tolkien was a fan of a good pipe of tobacco and included his love for the weed in his writings. In fact some of the most popular images of Tolkien include him smoking his pipe.
There simply is no cannabis smoking in either The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings and anyone who tells you different is wrong. It is tobacco that they all smoke in Tolkien’s books and any pipe smoker will fight you over that fact. The love of the halfling’s leaf displayed by the characters is exactly the love you’ll find in any real world pipe smoker like Tolkien. Fantasy and reality are the same when it comes to pipe smoking.
To reiterate because I’m tired of seeing foolish articles saying Tolkien characters were getting high… ALL THE CHARACHTERS SMOKED TOBACCO, NOT CANNABIS.
