“All along [the Communist Party] have argued that it is possible to work on just economic reform without political reform, but now the current crisis has underscored the need for political reform,” – http://www.nbcnews.com/news/china/chinas-markets-president-xi-faces-most-serious-crisis-date-n389151
No matter what is going on, you can always count on somebody somewhere in the NBC empire finding a way to twist it to be a comment and call for western style democracy in China.
You will find this mildly insidious and suggestive writing across most major American “news” companies. They are obsessed with portraying everything in the terms of “China versus USA”, “Western Democracy versus the Communists!”, “American capitalism versus Chinese capitalism!” Simply look for an article regarding China at any popular news station. It will always be portrayed in the terms of war or competition. For gods sake iron ore is described in the terms of war, gold is described in the terms of war, damn pork is described in the terms of war! Everything is a competition and China is always a threat!
Whether this is due to pressure from their media mogul owners, government leaning, or profiteering of the creation of a new sort of cold war culture between the US and China… I couldn’t tell you. All I can tell you is that when Chinese officials complain about their presentation in Western media, they do have a point. They really do. Representation in media matters.
