We Need A Thanksgiving Day Black Friday Blackout

Here we are at 4am scouring the internet for deals on various products that are dropping right now. Instead of sleeping or getting ready for a family holiday, we’re engaging in consumerism (an economic and social system where people want to buy and own more goods and services than what’s necessary for survival or status) because that’s the only way to get a genuinely low price on goods sold at places like Walmart and Amazon.

We no longer have Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is Black Friday… Black Thursday… whatever, it’s just now two days of advertisements and “deals”. It’s one big Black Friday.

I mean do you see how sad that is?

We’re all in this competition against not the retailers holding these deals over our heads but with each other for these deals. We’re fighting over something that should be a normal part of our lives. Good deals shouldn’t be a rarity but rather a rule. Since 2001 retailer’s profit margins have more than doubled. We fight, they profit.

And sometimes it isn’t even for a good deal. I have baskets of goods that I keep a watch on, retailers / companies have been RAISING prices all month so that they can now discount those products to… their regular price and call it a deal.

It’s hellish and almost dystopian.

And that’s why I believe that we should calm the hell down and have a blackout law for Thanksgiving, giving us a single day where deals are not constantly dropping and people are missing them simply because they want to be with family. Basically let’s level the playing field while preserving a family holiday.

It’s sad that we’re at this point, it’s sad I have to suggest this, it’s sad that we don’t just get good deals regularly… but this is where we are as a society. To roll things back to a more rational place we need to start by setting aside a day without advertisements and deals dropping.

I mean really, have you noticed just how many advertisements there are? Have you noticed that people are being trampled? People are being punched in the face? People are wrestling over products in got dang public for deals? Some 17 people have died since 2006.

How is that appropriate or desirable for anyone?

A law to restrict advertising and retailers deal drops on Thanksgiving day is a necessity now. Blackout Black Friday.
