Qui-Gon Jinn – The Plot Builder of a Jedi Knight

Qui-Gon Jinn was the mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi and was the padawan of Count Dooku (aka Darth Tyranus).

Qui-Gon Jinn was a maverick and powerful Jedi while still alive and often went against the will of the Jedi Council.

Qui-Gon Jinn died at the hands of Darth Maul on the planet of Naboo, thus ending his presence in the films after Episode I.

*When I talk about Qui-Gon Jinn, I am only addressing the story line from the Star Wars films. *

While Qui-Gon Jinn has been more fleshed out as a character in books and games, in the films he remains woefully inadequate.

I mean what is the point of Qui-Gon Jinn?

In the Star Wars films he’s just this character thrown in to set up the plot line for the entire Star Wars film universe.

And they tease us in the film with hints of his past “if you followed the code you’d be on the council”. We don’t even learn that his master had been Count Dooku until the information was just casually tossed at us in Episode II.

During Episode I, they don’t get us attached to him as a character and then the movie acts as if his final fight scene and subsequent death are so important and sad. How annoying is that?

They give us no information on Qui-Gon Jinn and then act as if the entire Star Wars universe had come crashing down with Qui-Gon Jinn’s death.

That sure didn’t happen.

What really happened in our minds?

Anakin Skywalker became Obi-Wan Kenobi’s padawan. That’s it.

Qui-Gon Jinn is merely a plot device to establish a basic story line.

And that right there is why I am currently quite annoyed with Episode I and Qui-Gon Jinn.

At the end of the day, I think it’s sad that Qui-Gon Jinn wasn’t fleshed out and Liam Neeson only got to be in the one film

I’d take him over Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, any day.

Side Note

And think… Qui-Gon Jinn will probably never ever be mentioned again… not in any of the new Star Wars movies…

Why would they mention him in the new Star Wars movies? The whole Star Wars universe has moved on… he’s no longer a notable character… nobody is ever going to go “You know who I miss? Qui-Gon Jinn…”

Qui-Gon Jinn is truly a one off character 🙁
