Okay… right. So.
If you weren’t aware, Mary Jane Watson is a character from the Marvel universe that you might know from Spiderman TV shows or movies…
Mary Jane Watson is first mentioned in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 (Aug. 1964), and is initially used as a running joke of the series, as Peter Parker’s Aunt May repeatedly attempts to set her unwilling nephew up on a date with her. Parker (a.k.a. Spider-Man) consistently worms his way out of meeting Mary Jane who, aside from a brief appearance in #25 (June 1965) with her face obscured, is never actually seen until The Amazing Spider-Man #42 (Nov. 1966).

And you see… some people on twitter are enraged over the fact that Zendaya will be playing Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Spiderman movie.
Why are people upset?
Because, apparently, Zendaya has the wrong skin color.

@genophilia @jnwtts @Zendaya @TomHolland1996There’s no way I’ll let my kids watch this degenerate anti-white garbage.

It seems that people are under the impression that unless actors are exactly the way they are described at some point inside the art in which they appear… it is some kind of conspiracy / decision based on non-meritorious criteria.
I do not hold with this view.
I find it wildly inappropriate and disturbing that people would criticize an artistic decision based off of their hate, antisemitism, bigotry… rather than based off of their opinion of Zendaya’s acting skills.
The very people who say that the world should be based on merit and that people should not get any benefits or help based off of the color of their skin or heritage… are criticizing a decision not based off of merit, but the color of Zendaya’s skin.
That in itself is disturbing.
Their incomprehensible hatred of Jews is also wildly disturbing…
“Hollywood jews” are you kidding me???
What the hell am I supposed to say to that? I don’t know if anybody involved with casting decisions for Spiderman is Jewish or not and I don’t think anybody else does either… How do you debunk a ‘Jewish conspiracy’ when the conspiracy is based off of nothing to begin with?
I do not know.
But what I do know… is that acting / theater has always been flexible in who portrays what character.
Hell, back in 1600’s Japan men were cross-dressing to play female roles…
The modern all-male kabuki, known as yarō-kabuki (young man kabuki), was established during these decades. After women were banned from performing, cross-dressed male actors, known as onnagata (“female-role”) or oyama, took over.

Ancient Greece also had male actors play female roles… Over 2000 years ago.
The cast of a Greek play in the Dionysia was comprised of amateurs, not professionals (all male).

My point is, that if 2000+ years ago people could accept all kinds of men playing all kinds of women… I feel like you can accept an actor having a shade darker of skin.
And what I also know…
Is that Spiderman is being produced by free individuals who have an absolute right to choose whomever they want to play whatever they want. My Grandma used to tell me something that applies here… MYOB.
Mind your own business.
Update (9/03/2016) – @genophilia suspended
Apparently, @genophilia got themselves suspended…
I still laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of this incident. Absolutely crazy.
